The Sand Pebble

Eight Bedroom Oceanfront House, Located in Nags Head

We usually arrive in Nags Head late in the evening for our time at The Sand Pebble. It's over five hours from our home in Winston-Salem. We don't leave until late in the day, and that means it's late when we pull in the driveway, get out of the car, and finally hear the waves crashing on the beach. We know we're there.

We haul our things out of the car to the elevator, then drop various belongings off on the various floors. The family members claim a room, throwing their suitcases, bookbags and other paraphernalia in, then begin exploring up and down throughout the house. We know we're here.

On the top floor, we load the food we brought from home into the pantry and sub-zero, consider a quick run to the grocery store - but decide against it. Everything in its place, we drop onto the sectional or sink into one of the wing chairs and take a deep, relaxing breath. We know we're here.

I open the door to the deck facing the Atlantic, step outside and let my eyes adjust to the dark. The waves, breaking white against the pitch blackness of the nighttime ocean, come into focus. The plethora of stars directly above reminds me that I'm out of the city. I know I'm here.

As I stand there, the moon breaks the horizon. The original sliver turns into a quarter, half, and continues until the gleaming round ball appears to rest on the edge of the world. Nearly as bright as the sun, the full moon casts its beam across the water. The thick line of the beam wrinkles in the waves as it points directly from the moon, to me. Now I really know I'm here.
